Chesterton Academy

Life at Chesterton

Student Life

From our House System to clubs, athletics, and pilgrimage, students at Chesterton Academy find real community, leadership, and the ideal conditions for virtue.

House System

A 1,000-Year-Old Tradition

Chesterton Academy's House system is drawn from the 1,000-year-old tradition of Christian education exemplified in the colleges at Oxford and Cambridge. The Houses provide real, tangible community within the larger school, giving students the opportunity to take ownership, fulfill the call to leadership, and cultivate the ideal conditions for virtue.

Each House has two Senior and two Junior prefects, two faculty advisors, and several parent liaisons. Houses are named for the four saints — two from the West, two from the East — who support the Chair of Peter in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome.

The White Horse Cup

The Houses are engaged in continual competition for the White Horse Cup, awarded each year to the House with the most points. The cup is proudly displayed in the school office, and the winning House's name is engraved on it each year to keep a record for posterity. Last year's winners — House Augustine.

House Augustine

Caritas Red & Faith Ivory

St. Augustine (354–430), the bishop of Hippo, was both a philosopher and theologian, and an influential church leader in north Africa. His works on grace, free will, and the just war remain among the most influential in Christian history.

House Ambrose

St. Ambrose (c. 338–397) was the bishop of Milan and one of the four original Doctors of the Church. He promoted the rights of the church in relation to the imperial state and was the teacher of St. Augustine.

House Athanasius

St. Athanasius the Great (c. 293–373) was a theologian who became the patriarch of Alexandria. He is best remembered for his role in the conflict with Arianism, though his influence covers a vast array of theological topics.

House Chrysostom

Fides Blue & Character Gold

St. John Chrysostom (c. 347–407), archbishop of Constantinople, is known for his eloquence in preaching, his denunciation of the abuse of authority, and the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom. He is particularly honored in the Eastern Orthodox Church.

Rome & Assisi

Pilgrimage

Every other year, Chesterton Academy juniors and seniors have the opportunity for a pilgrimage to Rome and Assisi, Italy. They encounter relics from the saints, sing for the Holy Father, and see in real life the wonders of the ancient churches in the Eternal City.

The itinerary includes the major churches in Rome, Orvieto, and Assisi in just under two weeks. Travelers walk the paths of pilgrims, pray at the tombs of the martyrs, and enjoy being steeped in Italian culture — growing in faith and deepening friendships, all while learning about the history of our Church and the Eternal City.
